Sparta,
Kentucky Sparta began as a village named Brock’s Station around 1802, on either side of Eagle Creek. But as the first settlers moved on further west due to disputed land grants, companies bought the land and sold it in sections to new settling farmers. Many grist mills were located along the banks of the Creek, the largest one being named Sparta. A covered bridge once connected the two sides of town and later bridges were built upon its pillars. The first public building on what is the Gallatin County side of the Creek was the train depot, built when the railroad came through Sparta. This started a time of growth resulting in its incorporation as a town in 1852. By 1940, Sparta had four general stores, a lumber yard, stockyards and two tree nurseries among other businesses. Today, the railroad still runs through Sparta along Eagle Creek and an I-71 interchange is just a mile away . |
